Home, sweet home.
When we decided to move to New Orleans, we immediately began house hunting. I mean, immediately downloaded the Realtor app. I cannot tell you how many homes we swiped through on Realtor.com. We fell in love with a few, and raised our eyebrows at a few... I mean, why do people decorate their homes so weird?
Of course, Cory and I had very different taste in what we were looking for. He wanted two-story, in a gated neighborhood, maybe outside of the city. I wanted something that looked like a shotgun and very traditional New Orleans.
After making Dylan drive back and forth a few times, we set out on one Friday to find THE ONE. We were determined, as we had a list of about 10 to look at. When I woke up that Friday morning, Cory said "hey. look at this house that was just listed this morning. Ask Dylan to add this to our list. What's one more? " Well, ya'll, that one more turned out to be the one.
We drove up to the house, and when I got out... the pink was overwhelming. But, it was a shotgun and paint is easy to fix, so I climbed the stairs. I walked in, and the first thing I saw was GLASS DOORKNOBS! REAL WOOD FLOORS! WOOD MANTELS! A FRONT PORCH! A DRIVEWAY! A LEGIT LAUNDRY ROOM! ya'll. I fell in love immediately. Like, can't eat-can't sleep-over the moon- reach for the fence- world series kinda stuff love. We stayed for awhile, taking it all in, and then ya'll, we left. And looked at other houses. Who does that? We did. But, by the end of the day, we just knew this house was meant for us and we put in an offer. 24 hours later, she was ours.
Now, that was the easy part. Two months later, after signing the contract, we went to our new home, and boy was it hot in there. Even for July. So, we switched the air on and left for the night. The next day, Mom and I met the movers at the house and it was still hot in there. Ya'll--- our brand new AC unit was broken! After paying a very nice old man to put new Freon in it, then calling the original guy to come and fix the even bigger problem we figured out, it was fixed and three days later, our house was cool!
Our favorite thing is sitting on that front porch, watching the neighborhood and world walk by. Stella likes sticking her face in between the slats of the railing like she's in prison, but whatevs. It's a few blocks from a streetcar stop, walking distance to our fav Irish Pub, The Holy Ground. Stella is making her mark in every yard around and barks a... friendly hello to passersbys from the backyard... Or from the front door. This house has been a dream, and we're slowly turning it into a home. We have got to get more furniture, hang some stuff on the walls and hang more curtains. But, it's the best. We actually LOVE the pink now, and are trying to incorporate small pink things inside now. I'm lucky that I got to win the home battle, for now.
